Press:
“Tony Gudwien, the mind behind Heavy Duty Felt, has a knack for making home-recorded albums that could give larger studios a run for their money. Don't Kid Yourself is incredibly appealing despite (or perhaps due to) its earnest indifference and occasional tunelessness. There's a laid-back, non-threatening vibe here that can only come about when an artist isn't afraid to miss the mark and doesn't mind if you notice. It's only after a few listens that you realize you couldn't imagine these songs having the same character without the quirks, the missteps and the occasional sour note. Gudwien does it all with a sort of effortless flair that keeps every song feeling incredibly alive, like a work-in-progress that's captivating in its evolution. "Snapshots" veers from unnerving to engulfing, drowning in a wash of half-memories and reverb, while "Erase Completely" squirms and burps with a mischievous life all its own. And when they bust out the found noises on "It's Not Fair", like a jug band let loose in the wedding gazebo, they enter Matmos territory. These abstract electronic elements pervade the disc, but it's the strummed guitars, piano lines and tenor sax they flit between that gives each song its soul.

Gudwien deftly blends breathy earnestness with low-stress electronica and minor chords to create a kind of geek catharsis, and he's talented enough to make it look like he doesn't care. The lack of pomp is refreshing. Could I use a higher ratio of sweet notes to sour? Sure -- but then, I didn't just reel off a John Vanderslice-lite album in my basement, so I won't nitpick. Don't Kid Yourself is that rare pleasant surprise, a DIY album you can describe to friends without the "DIY" paraphrase and still feel good about.”
